WPA Hothouse Video: Jacolby Satterwhite Curated by Julie Chae
for Washington Project for the Arts (WPA)
at Capitol Skyline Hotel, Washington, DC
on view February 8 - March 28, 2014
In the past two years, Jacolby Satterwhite (b. 1986, Columbia, South Carolina, USA) has taken the art world by storm with his interactive performances and video installations. His art incorporates influences ranging from art history Old Masters, video games, surrealism, Dada and Fluxus practices, fashion, consumer culture, popular culture, sex, medicine and math. As Satterwhite remarks in an Art21 New York Close Up artist profile video, his works "extend the frames" of video, performance, 3-D animation, drawings and prints to explore memory, insider/outsider art practices and meta-narratives. In performance, his avatar/character's interaction with viewers transforms them into participants in the worlds of his videos.
