This exhibition presents a series of works by Jacolby Satterwhite leading up to his highly-anticipated new video, Reifying Desire 6, which makes its world premiere at the Whitney Museum of American Art’s 2014 Biennial. The mini-retrospective features videos, drawings, prints and photos as well as a special 2-channel installation of the video Country Ball 1989-2012 with home video footage from the Satterwhite family’s 1989 Mother’s Day picnic in South Carolina and interconnected prints and drawings.
About the Artist
Jacolby Satterwhite, based in Brooklyn, NY, received his MFA from the University of Pennsylvania (2010), BFA from the Maryland Institute of Contemporary Art (2008) and has attended the Skowhegan School for Painting and Sculpture (2009) with the Cosby Fellowship Award. In addition to 2013 solo exhibitions at Mallorca Landings (Mallorca, Spain) and Monya Rowe Gallery (New York, NY), Satterwhite's work most recently highlighted the Sundance Film Festival 2014's "New Frontier: Reifying Desire Anthology." His work has been on view throughout the country, including exhibitions at: Studio Museum in Harlem, Grey Art Gallery of NYU, Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, Bronx Museum of Art, New Museum of Contemporary Art and Socrates Sculpture Park. Featured in the Huffington Post’s “Black Artists: 30 Contemporary Art Makers Under 40 You Should Know,” his work has repeatedly been reviewed in The New York Times, The New Yorker and Artforum, among many others. His numerous honors and awards include: Louis Comfort Tiffany Grant (2013), Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Workspace Artist in Residence (2013-2014), Art Matters Grant (2013), Fine Arts Work Center Fellowship (2012-2013 and 2011-2012) and Grand Prize in "Driven" exhibition at the Smithsonian Institute's S. Dillon Ripley Center (2007); and his work is in distinguished public and private collections throughout the U.S. and abroad.
